Course overview

Build a rewarding career as a dental prosthetist with this specialised, advanced‑level qualification. Dental prosthetists work independently to design, manufacture and fit complete and partial dentures, mouthguards and other dental appliances, helping people regain comfort, confidence and quality of life. This course is ideal for those looking to extend their existing oral health skills, as well as newcomers seeking a clinically focused pathway into the profession.

You will develop the technical and clinical capability to take impressions, issue and maintain dental prosthetics, conduct try‑ins, and perform laboratory production work. Your learning is supported by broad knowledge in pathophysiology, pharmacology, radiology and clinical practice. At TAFE Queensland, experienced industry educators provide personalised guidance and hands‑on training to ensure you graduate confident and job‑ready.

On completion, you will be eligible to seek registration and employment as a dental prosthetist, with opportunities to continue into further study as your career progresses.

Accreditation

The Bachelor of Dental Prosthetics is nationally recognised and endorsed as an accredited course by the Australian Dental Council (ADC) and approved by the Dental Board of Australia. While at TAFE Queensland, all students are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) by TAFE Queensland. Full details are available from the AHPRA website.

Graduates of courses accredited by the ADC are eligible to apply for registration with (AHPRA) and are required to obtain registration prior to commencing practice. Please see the AHPRA website for further details regarding the registration process.

What you will study

The Bachelor of Dental Prosthetics is Australian Qualification Framework level 7 qualification. The successful achievement of the Bachelor of Dental Prosthetics requires you to complete all units from the list below.  You will also undertake clinical practice in the TAFE Queensland dental clinic at our South Bank campus, so you can start using and improving your new skills and knowledge in a real-world environment.

    This unit aims to reinforce and refine the students’ understanding of removable prosthodontics expanding on the areas covered in dental technology I. This unit supports dental technology II and includes treating, partially edentulous cases and preparing students for clinical sessions. The emphasis is on enhancing the students’ knowledge, critical thinking, and practical applications for complete and partial denture treatment, including immediate denture provision and follow-up procedures. This unit also aims to have students be able to recognise and predict some of the typical problems that can occur during the laboratory phase of complete and partial denture construction; explain how to resolve these problems; analyse the various concepts of denture occlusion and design an individual occlusal scheme for a complete or part denture.

    Radiology includes the relevant knowledge of radiography and practical implementation of taking and interpreting dental radiographs of diagnostic value. Students will develop the ability to recognise all intra-oral and extra-oral radiographic anatomy and identify the radiographic appearance of direct and indirect restorative materials. This unit will include the Identification of dental caries and periodontal conditions as viewed on dental radiographs. Students will need to demonstrate how to define and recognise normal and abnormal signs on radiographs. This unit teaches students how to appropriately implement and modify radiographic techniques to produce a radiographic image of sound diagnostic standards. Students must demonstrate practical radiographic taking and processing skills with verbal explanations relating to clinical skills and patient treatment.

The following information outlines the minimum entry requirements for all admission into this course. Prospective students should be aware of the admission and ongoing enrolment requirements for their course.

All applicants
To commence the Bachelor of Dental Prosthetics course students should have satisfactory completion of recent year 12 (secondary education) in an Australian school system or overseas equivalent. All non-school-leaver applicants must have relevant work experience or qualification that indicates likely success of course completion. Non-school leavers can be applicants such as those with higher education, vocational education and training study or those with relevant work and life experience. Learn more

Sciences
Assumed Knowledge
Assumed knowledge explains the minimum level of knowledge we believe you have in some Units of Study before you start your Course. It is assumed that applicants will have the following:

* English (4, SA) or English (Units 3 & 4, C)

It is also  highly recommended that applicants have Physics, Chemistry or Biology with a minimum of Sound Achievement or similar result.

Manual dexterity
Manual dexterity is the ability to effectively use your hands and fingers with precision.   A high degree of manual dexterity is required for success as a Dental Prosthetist.  Part of the entry requirement and ongoing enrolment in this course is maintaining your manual dexterity.  Applicants are advised that a manual dexterity test forms part of the requirements for entry into this course.

  • Applicants should be a minimum of 17 years of age and turning 18 during the first year of study with TAFE Queensland. 
  • International applicants who are under 18 years of age and are applying for a student visa are required by the Australian Department of Home Affairs to have adequate welfare arrangements in place.
  • Applicants who do not meet the above criteria  are required to participate in an Interview with the Course Coordinator prior to an offer being made by TAFE Queensland.

English Language Proficiency Requirements
To be considered for enrolment into an approved Bachelor of Dental Prosthetics course, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) requires that graduates have met the English language skills requirements as outlined in the English language skills registration standard (2025) leading to initial registration.

The Dental Board of Australia (DBA) have also outlined the English language skills registration standard that is required. These requirements include a written declaration that English is your primary language or evidence of achievement of the minimum English language test result. All applicants are required to meet the requirements outlined in the English Language Skills Acknowledgement Form. English test results remain valid for no more than two years between final examination date and the date of commencement of study and must appear on a single result certificate.

Please note that Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) does not satisfy English Language proficiency for this qualification.

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

You will be provided with a recommended reading list and/or required textbooks during orientation or at the start of each unit. The purchase of these resources may incur additional costs, or you may be able to borrow them from the TAFE Queensland library network. You will also need to have access to a Dental Toolkit, Articulators and 3D face bow (approximately $2,400). Further information will be provided during orientation.

Placement

Clinical Practice Placement
During your course you will be required to complete clinical practice so you can start using and improving your new skills and knowledge in a real-world environment. You’ll be required to undertake patient contact and consultation within the TAFE Queensland Dental Clinic which is open to the public. Our clinic provides an opportunity for you to work hands-on with real paying clients.

Clinical practice is conducted as part of your units of study within the course, and you will be expected to provide your completed immunisation status in order to undertake your clinical practice.

TAFE Queensland follows the transparency requirements related to Infectious Disease status; Immunisation status and Criminal history checks for its students as outlined by the Dental Board of Australia and AHPRA.

These transparency requirements are embedded within the registration requirements for dental practitioners or those seeking to become registered in the dental profession. Orientation session
Part of the Higher Education enrolment process at TAFE Queensland is your attendance at orientation. This provides you with information about being a Dental Prosthetist. It will enable you to make an informed decision about your ability to successfully complete the course.

Successful applicants enrolling into the first semester may be required complete a Skills Check. 

This helps you to decide if your course is right for you and allows us to understand your current abilities in English, Maths, as well as using Digital technology.

Government Loan Schemes
This course is also approved for FEE-HELP. FEE-HELP is an Australian Government loan scheme that covers the cost of your tuition fees on your behalf. FEE-HELP is available to students who are not studying in a Commonwealth supported place (and are therefore not eligible for HECS-HELP).

Criminal History check
During your enrolment at TAFE Queensland you may be required to provide TAFE Queensland with updated Criminal History Checks. If your police check identifies that you have a criminal history you may be disqualified from being eligible to undertake your clinical assessment, which would affect your course outcomes. If you think this might impact you, please speak to the course coordinator for further information.   For further information see AHPRA.

First Aid and CPR
You must provide evidence of the attainment of a first-aid certificate and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate before commencement of Semester 2, Year 1. TAFE Queensland offers the First Aid and CRP Skill Set (SSHLT0031) which includes Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (HLTAID009) and Provide First Aid (HLTAID011) core units. The cost may vary dependant on requirements. Students must meet the costs of their First Aid/CPR course. CPR re-certification is required annually. You are required to provide updated evidence of CPR currency prior to each clinical unit.

Please note the following exclusions:

  • First Aid and CPR certificates from Queensland Health will not be accepted as Queensland Health is not an accredited training provider.
  • First Aid and CPR certificates from online courses will not be accepted.
  • International First Aid or CPR training certificates will not be accepted.

Immunisation and Vaccination and health tests
TAFE Queensland has a duty of care to its students, staff and patients to prevent the transmission of disease. It is mandatory that all students have current immunisation and vaccination status to minimise illness from communicable diseases and infections. TAFE Queensland follows the Dental Board of Australia’s Guidelines on Infection Control Australian Dental Council Guidance for registered dental practitioners: Infection prevention and control and the Queensland Health Policy on student placements.

Students must meet the costs associated with these evidence requirements.

All evidence for the required immunisations, vaccinations and health tests must be provided prior to commencing in Semester 2, Year 1. Some vaccinations may take several months to complete the vaccination program. This may mean you will need to commence your vaccination plan at the commencement of your study.

Graduates of this course will be eligible to apply for registration with the Dental Board of Australia via the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency subject to meeting any additional requirements that may be stipulated by the Dental Board of Australia.

For initial registration as a dental practitioner or student you will be required to make a declaration that you are aware of your infection status for blood borne viruses and that you will comply with the Communicable Diseases Network Australia’s Australian National Guidelines for the Management of Health Care Workers known to be infected with Blood-Borne Viruses and with the requirements of the Dental Board of Australia’s Guidelines on infection control. Blood-borne viruses (BBVs) include Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV) and human immunodeficiency (HIV) viruses. These viruses are transmitted by blood-to-blood contact or, in some instances, with bodily fluids contacting blood or mucosa.
