Course overview

This practical course will allow you to become trade qualified as a boilermaker or welder. Demand for structural steel and welding trades workers in Australia continues to grow. According to the Government's Job Outlook service, there's likely to be around 47,000 job openings over the next five years with opportunities available in the manufacturing, construction and mining industries.

Learn how to assemble fabricated components, perform sheet and plate assembly, interpret technical drawings, and perform gas tungsten arc welding, manual metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding and welding to code standards. You'll also discover to mark off and fabricate structural steel and other metal stock to make or repair metal products and structures such as boilers and pressure vessels. You'll graduate with industry-specific skills in welding and boilermaking, as well as skills in planning, engineering measurement, interpreting technical drawings, and computer technology. Our industry-expert teachers will ensure you can apply occupational health and safety and code standards to work effectively.

Successful completion of this course will prepare you for a career as a boilermaker, steel fabricator or welder in the engineering, manufacturing, transport and construction industries. You will also be well placed to progress your career in the field of engineering fabrication.

You must already be employed to enrol as an apprentice or trainee with TAFE Queensland. Speak to your employer about choosing TAFE Queensland as your Supervising Registered Training Organisation (SRTO).

Costs:

Eligible apprentices and trainees that meet the Queensland state funding requirements will be charged a set fee per nominal hour. These fees are calculated at a regulated rate of $1.60 per nominal hour. Concession rates apply for students who hold a current Health Care Card or who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

Non-funded apprentices and trainees will be charged a fee for service cost. These will be confirmed prior to the commencement of training.
Information regarding costs will be outlined on the agreed training plan, which will be provided to the employer and apprentice or trainee at time of induction.

Selection criteria

To study an apprenticeship program you must be indentured as an apprentice with your employer.

Employers need to be able to provide the necessary human and physical resources to qualify for an apprentice.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes.

Workwear and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required may include:

Protective clothing - long cotton drill industry-standard clothing
Eye protection – safety glasses must comply with AS1338
Protective footwear - safety toe, leather upper, non-slip soles must comply with AS2210
Leather gloves to AS2161
Hair protection - peak cap with a snood capable of fully containing hair
If you are required to undertake activities that produce welding fumes you will be required to use P2 moulded half-face respirators, or alternative RPE of equal or higher protection

If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

Assessment methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
