English Language Requirements
When you come to study and train at TAFE Queensland, your classes, training and assessments will be in English, so it’s important to understand the minimum English language requirements before you apply.
The information on this page will help you understand what the minimum level of English language is for our different course level.
You should check the relevant course brochure for full details on the English language entry requirements for your chosen course.

ABOUT IELTS
We use International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores as part of our entry requirements to our international programs. However we recognise other English language tests also. Use the English Language Equivalencies table to determine your IELTS equivalent score. You are required to meet at least one of the English language entry requirements listed in the equivalencies table
COMPLETING THE IELTS TEST
We run IELTS tests frequently and there is a range of support materials available. If you are in Australia, you can complete the IELTS tests at our IELTS Testing Centre at our Southport campus.
COMPLETING A PLACEMENT TEST
If you have not completed an internationally recognised and standardised English test you can complete a placement test. A placement test is a good way to get an understanding of what your English proficiency is, and can be your pathway to further education and training.
About the placement test
● A placement test is completed under an international agent’s supervision
● Will give you an idea of your level of English. It is not a substitute for an internationally recognised and standardised English test (such as IELTS examination) and cannot be used to enter a vocational education and training program
● A placement test will suggest how many weeks of an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) you will require
● Once you have completed your English language course you may like to take the IELTS examination
For more information on the placement test including fees and location please contact our International Course Advisers.
